Terri Schiavo – Looking Forward on the Fifth Anniversary of Terri’s Death

The case caught media attention when Terri’s husband and parents got caught up in a conflict regarding the decision of disconnecting her from life support. Terri’s husband Michael filed for a petition to remove her feeding tube in 1993 which was strongly opposed by Terri’s parents.

Terri’s feeding tube was plugged out in April 24, 2001 for the first time, but it was soon reinstated due to legal decisions. Growing media attention attracted politicians, advocates, institutions to get involved in the case.

Even President Bush signed legislation in 2005 to keep Terri alive but she was finally plugged out of life support on March 18, 2005.

14 appeals, numerous motions, petitions, five federal district court suits, a congressional committee subpoena, four denials of certiorari from the Supreme Court of the United States and 15 year’s later, Terri finally rested in peace at the Pinellas Park hospice on March 31.
