In a groundbreaking step that will cheer lakh of students across the country, the government announced Monday that the class X examination of CBSE will be voluntary from the next academic year (2010-11), while the grading system will be introduced this year itself.

Over eight lakh students responsible for their class X examinations in March 2010 to take the board examinations, the results will be declared through the grading system. From 2011 the classification system will continue, but the board exams are optional.

Class X examination of CBSE will be abolished 2010-11 while grading system will be introduced from 2009-10 (current year), told the Human Resources Development Minister Kapil Sibal reporters here.

"After reading the board was abolished in 2011 (Class X), students will choose to take the board exam on the demand for the transfer (to another school) or who have entered into pre-university institutes," Sibal said.
